My Story

"Personal mastery is the Ideal; martial art is merely the vessel." — Sean Sena
Hello, I’m Sean Sena. As of this writing, this is my tenth year practicing martial arts. Not ten years of “casual” training, but ten years of dedication, sacrifice and breakthroughs. Some know me to be “the guy that teaches JKD”, some know that I actually competed in fencing and kickboxing and some are aware that I have my foundation deeply rooted in the art of Wing Chun.

However, very few know about my beginnings and my Why.

If you know anything about my past, you will see that growing up, I was a sickly, weak and defenseless young boy. Of course, it will be difficult to imagine such a version of me today but it is the truth. Just ask any of my family members, relatives or close friends, and they will tell you what kind of a child and teenager I was growing up. I was often ill, physically weak and never could do any of the sports I loved properly — much less martial arts.

This void of inadequacy, inferiority and inability haunted and tormented me for more than a decade.

Then, very slowly and very gradually but significantly, this void turned out to be an unending source of resilience and inspiration for me. Through martial arts training in my late teens, I was able to refine my personality and character and cultivate myself into becoming a focused, disciplined and self-sufficient thinker. Bit by bit, I overcame my physical, mental and emotional limitations and conquered them altogether.

I look at my starting point, I look at my change and I look at my present and to all of those who say “I’m not talented”, “I don’t have potential” or “I don’t have a chance”, I will tell you that you are wrong. We all have a chance. If I could get from where I was — an impossible negative start — to overcoming my seemingly overwhelming boundaries within and without, for sure I know that you can, too.

You just need to give yourself a chance.
Sean Sena

Philosophy

If Jeet Kune Do is merely your hobby, pastime or casual interest, I am not your guy.

If you tend to get involved with petty squabbles, arguments about lineages or bickering about techniques, I am not your guy either.

I have a reputation for being one of the most focused, disciplined and specialized JKD practitioners there is, and I expect the same level of practicality and dedication from those I work with.

With JKD, there are no quick fixes, no shortcuts and no overnight miracles.

It is all pure hard work, along with effective mentorship.

99.99% of people are unwilling and unable to prevail when it comes to sustained dedicated practice.

I know who I am, and I am looking only for that 0.01%.

If that’s not who you are, don’t waste my time.

Mission

At the core of my work is a simple, but powerful question:

How can the practice of Jeet Kune Do empower our lifestyles?

The first way I try to answer that question is to take the complex in combat and make it simple to understand. What are the fundamental forces that shape our success in the martial arts? What common misconceptions do we have about the way fighting works? What are the organizing principles that determine our progress in training?

The second way I try to answer that question is to apply these insights to everyday life. How can we most effectively harness what we have learnt in the martial arts into tangible results? How can we pinpoint the hidden roadblocks in our lives and overcome our mental barriers? How can we become the architect of our habits rather than the victim of them?

My ultimate goal is to answer a question that lies at the core of what it means to be a martial artist: is it possible to master ourselves by reinventing and disciplining ourselves through the martial arts? If so, how do we do it? My hope is—even if I can only answer this question in a modest way—that my work will inspire you, help you, and empower your martial arts journey.

Methodology

My approach to training in Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do consists of four pillars...

Clarity

At any point in time, you will always have clarity, direction and purpose that empowers every step of your training. You will be trained to be independent and self-sufficient as a martial artist.

Discipline

I will constantly and progressively push you to arrive at your maximum potential — physically, mentally and “emotionally”. You will experience significant breakthroughs through your training.

Longevity

I always take the recovery-first approach; I place a huge emphasis on mobility, compensation and recovery to ensure that we can push ourselves to the fullest without ever jeopardizing our health and well-being.

Unification

Personal Mastery is the goal; the practice of martial arts is merely the vessel to develop our consciousness in other to “get there”. Eventually, we must unify our expression and master ourselves.
